A LOT of people, actually most people and new entrepreneurs, start businesses on the side and in their free time, wen they aren't at work or school.
For anyone that is new here, my name is Taylor and I am currently in college and running Profiting Tools at the moment, where I am helping people and business start, grow and start making money through Instagram.
The focus of this article is going to be around college, as that is the point of life I am in, but it can also apply to anyone in school, in work or just short of time that are looking to start a business or even take the side hustle they have to the next level!
The first thing to realize before reading this article is that there is always time to chase your passions, it is just about wasting less time and changing your priorities.
Habits and How They Can Help You Build Your Business
Without a lot of time, you are going to have to maximize all of your time that you aren't at work or in class.
Whether that is in the morning, in the afternoon where you don't have class or when you get home from your 9-5 job and have from 7pm-2am to work on your passions.
How do you maximize your time and get rid of your distractions?
Through habits, that is how.
If you don't have the right habits you are just going to fall back to the bad habits during this free time and not be able to maximize the little time you have already.
If you have the habits of playing Fortnite on Xbox or scrolling through Instagram for hours every night and try and do those as well as chase your passions, it WON'T WORK.
Straight up, not going to work.
Entrepreneurship is hard and going to take A LOT of your time so you are going to have to give up your habits and focus on creating new ones.
Ready to start focusing on creating those new habits?
Here are two ideas:
-Delete the social media platform from your phone that keeps distracting you and then redownload it when you get everything done that you need to get done.
-Every time you start to think about falling back into your old habits try dong something productive. Do this until productivity is the habits and you kill the Xbox habit.
Organizing Your Time Everyday
You gotta figure out when your free time is and the plan that time out.
Create a list of the 5 things, that you don't already do every day, but the things that will get you closer to your goals and then block out your free time in order to get those done.
Not more than 5 becasue then you won't be able to go all in on everything and not less than 5 because then you won't maximize your time.
These things have to be things like reaching out to ______ number of businesses to work with or emailing _______ number of customers. Anything that actually gets you closer to your goals, that is what these 5 things should be.
So, determine your free time and then create 30 min-1 hour blocks of time to do each of these.
Also, block out time for working out, eating right and learning because you have to treat the body and mind right and it will translate into success in other areas of your life.
This 5 item list is known as the powerlist and I learned it on the MFCEO Project Podcast with Andy Frisella and I HIGHLY recommend you guys check it out as well!
What To Focus On
When you only have so much time in the day you aren't going to be able to put equal energy into everything, so what should you put your energy into in order to get the best results.
The first, and most important thing, that you need to be focusing on is social media.
Because the game of business is changing, everything is revolving around social media, views and attention. So, this is the basis of many businesses out there right now.
Attention is like the oxygen of your business, without it you won't get customers, won't make sales and won't be making any money. Social media is how you get that attention.
You can create content for FREE and start building an audience that trusts you and start gaining traction. It allows you to reach people that you wouldn't have been able to reach before and the most important thing that it helps you do is to create a community that trusts and will buy from you.
On social media you want to be focusing your time on content, community and marketing.
On the side of content you want to focus on creating content of value for people. Whether that be through Instagram posts, Facebook videos, Snapchat stories, etc. Create content that entertains people , teaches them, give your point of view, or even better all three! It's called Edutainment!
To create your community you want to be focused on engaging not only through the comments on your posts but also start liking and commenting your thoughts and opinions on things in the community. Whether that be through scrolling through the hashtags in your niche or if it's commenting on larger accounts in your niche. Be part of the community.
Marketing is another area you are going to want to focus your time and energy on whether that be through social media or through promoting through a blog like this.
Most of your marketing dollars are going to be put to use the best on social media so spend your focus on there. But there are other areas of marketing to focus on as well such as creating landing pages, blogging, guest posting and working with other people, creating campaigns, funnels, etc.
Figure out what your goals are and then take the actions and do what needs to be done in order to reach those through marketing.
If you want to sell more products, maybe create a funnel starting with free content and then market it to people who have already read the article through Facebook ads. Then they will land on a landing page and support you through purchasing.
The final area where you should focus your limited time in is going to be sales.
You can create a base for your sales off of social media but you can also look at options such as emails, etc.
Sales is important because you can market all you ant but if you can't create that sales page that sells or if you can't reach out and make the sales then you won't find success.
You want to find out your goals through sales and then attack it. Figure if you want to reach out to brands in order to create content for them, reach out for paid promotion or even just reach out in order to sell your services.
You can leverage the direct messages on social media platforms to create these sales as well as through emails.
Those are the three areas you need to focus on as an entrepreneur when you are in school, have a job or just have limited time!
Set Aside Time To Learn and Read
As I talked about above you want to also focus on your body and your brain as success in those areas directly translate to your success in other areas such as your business.
Set aside time to learn through podcasts and reading, those are the two most important.
Read for an hour in the morning or at night, while you do cardio, at lunch or whenever you get some free time. Read business books, life books, success stories, online articles in your niche, etc. Gain a good amount of knowledge in a wide variety of areas.
You also should be focusing on learning through podcasts. As much as I love music, you have to cut back the amount you listen to throughout the day and make room for some podcasts.
Some great times I found to listen to podcasts are in the gym and in the car.
Because that when you can focus the most and get the most out of the podcasts compared to if you were listening while you work then you might not be able to get the takeaway you need to from the podcast.
So, you want to start listening to podcasts but don't now where to start?
Here are some of my favorite podcasts and are a great base to start off from and you can add to the list from here:
-The MFCEO Project Podcast
-The Gary Vee Audio Experience
-The Cardone Zone
-The School of Greatness
-The Tai Lopez Show
Enjoy the Journey
One of the most important things that I have learned through my years as a young entrepreneur in high school and college would be to accept the journey.
I ave tried focusing on money and buying things but I just didn't get any results and then got frustrated and lost motivation.
Instead focus on the journey and enjoying the process and not the rewards, that is when you start to get the real results. That is when I started to like what I did more, create better habits and start getting better results.
I also learned to focus on solving problems and start helping people. I actually started making more money doing that than I was focused on making money.
Find a real problem, figure out how to solve it and then leverage that.
Loved this lesson and it has changed my life so I just have to add it at the end!:)
