Day 36 of documenting this social media journey and I have a lessons for you today that stretches far beyond social media.
I was working out today and realized this one thing that helped me to realize why I wasn't retaining all of the information I was learning from my podcasts or books on a day to day basis.
I realized that I could not multitask while I was trying to learn as one of the tasks.
When you are trying to learn something, you have to have you full attention devoted to it so that you can fully understand it.
Why You Shouldn't Multitask Your Learning
About halfway through the workout today I realized that I hadn't been able to take away any real value from the podcast and really didn't even know what they were talking about on the episode anymore.
After thinking about it for a minute, I was able to come to the conclusion that it was because I was trying to multitask work on my phone at the same tie, taking away my attention from the podcast to something that required more attention (my work).
I also realized that when I was doing a simple activity, such as driving or working out (when I wasn't working at the same time) I was able to remember those pieces of advice for much longer down the road.
When your mind finds something that requires more attention, while trying to listen to a podcast, the podcast turns to background noise and then the task at had becomes what you are thinking about.
This leaves you listening to a podcast, but not really taking away anything of value from it.
How to Make Time for Self Education
So, how exactly do you make time for self education, such as books or podcasts? Because they are super important parts of the day!
The first thing you can do is to start off by finding the ideal times for podcasts. Do you have time to listen on the way to and from work (ideally because you don't get distracted as easy by your phone while driving), or even at the gym (if you aren't working at the same time, and finally in the shower is another great spot.
These are ideal areas because they are when you are doing tasks that don't require as much brain power as thinking about lessons from a podcast do.
Find the times that are best for you and listen during those times.
I would really just NOT reccommed during work or while you are working in something important because you might not catch all of the information or it won't stick in your mind as easy.
My Favorite Ways to Learn
My favorite ways to learn are through books and through podcasts. Because books give me the long story to really get into and then then also it helps learn from those farther above us than others are.
My next favorite way to learn is PODCASTS of course, because it allows you similar knowledge as a book would have, interviewing successful entrepreneurs an their story, and you can take them anywhere.
